BioGrad Education’s General Internal Medicine course provides a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to key skills and knowledge essential for internal medicine. This week-long course is designed for students interested in understanding the complexities of adult medical care, covering topics from cardiovascular and respiratory assessments to abdominal exams and cancer care. Guided by experienced clinicians, students will gain valuable insights and practical experience in a variety of core internal medicine disciplines.
This course covers an array of clinical skills in the contexts of cardiopulmonary and abdominal anatomy, physiology, disease and management. Practical skills covered on the course include clinical history taking, producing an ECG of your own heartbeat, OSCE style cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal examinations, spirometry and peak flow analysis, abdominal ultrasound assessment, medical imagery interpretation, ultrasound guided biopsies and more. The course is led by our highly skilled and experienced doctors and clinicians, helping students to develop their understanding and explore the plethora of opportunities available within the world of medicine.
The General Internal Medicine course runs from 9:30am – 4pm for 5 consecutive days at BioGrad Education’s clinical training facilities in Liverpool. We teach at a low student to tutor ratio (10:1) ensuring that students are closely supervised and encouraged at all times throughout their course. All students receive their own scrubs and stethoscope to use during the week and take home with them!
All our 5-day courses for 16-19 year olds can be used as your Gold DofE Residential! We will also take photos of you during your time in the clinics which will be sent to you upon completion, you can use these to begin building your LinkedIn presence and demonstrate your passion for medicine (this is looked upon incredibly favourably by medical schools!). You can opt for a personalised reference written by our senior doctors to be sent to a member of staff at your school/college, this can be used to support your UCAS application.
This course is ideal for students aged 16-19 with an interest in healthcare, internal medicine, or hospital care, providing excellent hands-on experience for those considering careers in medicine, nursing, paramedicine or other allied health professions. Experience gained and skills learnt act as highly valuable points of reference during medical school and university applications and interviews.

Day 1: Cardiovascular Basics and Heart Assessment
Following introductions to fellow students and lecturers, students don their scrubs and grab a stethoscope to start the week by mastering the art of medical history taking and learning the fundamentals of heart anatomy. Gain hands-on experience in listening to heart sounds to identify normal and abnormal patterns, a crucial skill for assessing cardiovascular health.

Day 2: Blood Pressure, ECGs, and Cardio Examination
Explore the cardiovascular system in depth by measuring blood pressure, producing ECG traces and understanding how they change with exercise. Learn to recognise common cardiac conditions, interpret ECGs, and perform a full cardiovascular examination to assess heart health.

Day 3: Respiratory System and Pulmonary Assessment
Dive into pulmonary anatomy and gain knowledge of common respiratory conditions. Practice interpreting chest X-rays (CXR) and using spirometry to assess lung function. Conduct a full OSCE style respiratory examination to identify and evaluate respiratory issues effectively.

Day 4: Abdominal Examinations and Ultrasound Assessment
Learn about common issues affecting the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. This day focuses on performing abdominal exams and utilising ultrasound to visualise and assess the abdominal organs, essential for diagnosing and managing various internal conditions.

Day 5: NEWS Score, Cancer Care, and Biopsy Techniques
Learn about the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) system, a key tool for assessing and monitoring the severity of patient conditions, particularly in acute cases. This day also covers the fundamentals of cancer care, focusing on common types of cancer, treatment options, and patient management strategies. You'll gain insight into cancer imaging and management techniques to support diagnosis and treatment planning, along with practical training in ultrasound-guided biopsies for minimally invasive tissue sampling.

Time is given throughout the course for students to gain a proper understanding of the skills being taught with an opportunity to redo anything that has not been understood at any point.
BioGrad is an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This course may be used as your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential Award, which can be signed off by the course leader on the final day.
